Can I drive on a flat tyre?

8th October 2020

You should not continue driving if you have a flat tyre. However, it’s possible to drive a short distance, approximately a few hundred yards, so you can move your vehicle to a safe space. Once a tyre is punctured, the tyre can act as a cushion which protects the rim – allowing you time to drive to an area of safety (which is the only time you should drive on a flat tyre).

Driving on a flat tyre

As previously mentioned, when it comes to how far you can drive on a flat tyre, this is merely a few hundred yards. However, initially it may not be obvious as to whether you are driving if you are driving on a flat tyre – sometimes, you can be driving on a punctured tyre for weeks at a time. This is particularly common if you have driven over a nail for example, as nail’s typically hold the air in place, but release the air gradually over time. This is known as a slow puncture.

What to do when you experience a flat tyre

Of course, there are instances where you will be immediately aware you’re driving on a flat tyre – as your driving control will have been altered significantly. If you believe you are experiencing a flat tyre, you need to keep calm. If you begin to panic by slamming on the brakes, this can cause you to lose control of your vehicle – remain calm and drive your vehicle to a safe place out of the way of oncoming traffic.
